Moderate to heavy rains lashed most places in Punjab and Haryana, with 50 villages alongside the Yamuna in Sonepat district continue to remain on high alert for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday as the water in the river flowed much above the danger mark.
Chandigarh received heavy downpour last night and got 86.9 mm of rain, the MeT said in Chandigarh.
In Haryana, rains lashed Sonepat (45 mm), Jind (40 mm), Yamunanagar (38 mm), Jhajjar (30 mm), Faridabad (26 mm), Kalka (20 mm), Rewari (17 mm), Palwal (16 mm), Panchkula (15 mm), Mewat (15 mm), Bhiwani (14 mm), Gurgaon (12 mm), Ambala (6.5 mm) and Rohtak (5.6 mm).
In Punjab, among the places to be lashed by rains included Mohali (55 mm), Ropar (43 mm), Hoshiarpur (18 mm), Ferozepur (11 mm), Gurdaspur (6.4 mm) and Faridkot (6 mm).
Following release of 2.08 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathnikund barrage near Yamunanagar, there has been no let up in fury of the Yamuna near Sonepat on Saturday, a report said. The river has crossed the danger mark and flood waters have submerged the crops in about 50 villages along the river embankments. Sonepat's Deputy Commissioner Ajit Balaji Joshi, however, said the flood situation was under control. "The officials of the Sonepat district administration, revenue and irrigation departments are keeping a close watch on the situation caused by the swollen river.
