The driver of Bollywood film actress and BJP MP Hema Malini, whose car met with an accident in Rajsthan, has been arrested, police said on Friday. A two-year-old travelling in the other car involved in the crash was killed, while four others were admitted to a hospital.

"We have arrested the driver of Hema Malini's car, Mahesh Thakur, a resident of Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh," a police officer at Dausa, where the accident took place on Thursday evening, said.

Thakur has been arrested on charges of rash driving, causing death by negligence, besides others, the official said.

The Mathura MP was returning to Jaipur after a visit to the Mehendipur Balaji temple in Karauli district when her Mercedes hit an Alto at the Lalsot bypass on the highway. The people travelling in the hatchback were residents of Lalsot, the police said.

There were five people — one man, two women and two children — in the Alto car when the accident occurred. While the child died, the others received serious injuries.

Malini, who was sitting in the back seat, suffered a nasal fracture, with other injuries on her forehead, cheeks and legs. She was rushed to the Fortis Hospital in Jaipur where doctors conducted a CT scan and then administered stitches on her wounds, a source in the hospital said.

On Friday, Malini's daughter Esha Deol and Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje visited the BJP MP at the hospital. "She has lacerations in para-nasal area and on forehead near the right eyebrow," P Tamboli, facility director at Fortis said.

"A surgery of debridement and repair of lacerated wounds was carried out post-midnight," he said. It was a two-hour long process under general anesthesia. She is now in post-operative intensive care unit, he said.

Sonam (4) succumbed to injuries on way to hospital in Dausa, while four others Hanuman, his wife Shikha (35), Somil (5), and Seema (40), were shifted to Jaipur's SMS hospital, the SHO said.
