Scores of people had queued up to see 'Basanti' and the crowd had become unmanageable who had been waiting for the past three hours. Finally at around 7:55pm Hema Malini reached near Mathura refinery where the BJP workers had organised a small public meet.

The moment Malini made her way inside the small ground in her Audi, a number of men, women and children ran towards the stage. The situation got out of control and the organiser had to intervene by making announcements asking people to get down, cautioning them that the stage will fall.

However, star struck fans paid no heed and finally a portion of the stage collapsed. In her speech which lasted less than three minutes she concluded by saying 'stage gir raha hai' (the stage is falling) and left the public meet hurriedly.

Hema Malini is contesting from Mathura on a BJP ticket and asked the people to vote for development. Residents of the area were referring to her as Basanti, 'Brij Ki Gopi' and 'Dream girl'.

"Mathura has been ignored for long and if you choose me I will ensure this area is made part of the NCR region. I'll be the first woman to become an MP from here," she said.

Party worker tried to salvage the situation later by saying that the stage collapse should be seen as the immense support BJP is getting from the people.
