Heroin worth Rs 5.55 cr seized in Mumbai

The Air Intelligence Unit of city customs has seized 5550 grams of powder purported to be heroin and valued at Rs 5.55 crore in the international market from a Nigerian national at Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport here.

The narcotics was seized on Tuesday from Edbewole Rashidat Ayinke, a Nigerian national, who was to board a flight to Lagos via Addis Ababa by Ethopian airlines flight, according to Satish Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Customs.

On a tip-off, a discreet watch was kept on passengers movement and the accused was intercepted as she was proceeding to the transit lounge after completing check-in, immigration and customs formalities, he said.

During the screening of her baggage some abnormal images suspected to be narcotic drugs were noticed by the customs officers.

Examination of her three pieces of checked in baggage resulted in recovery of 5550 grams of powder purported to be heroin which were wrapped in bed sheets. The contraband was seized under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotrophic Substances (NDPS) Act.
