The alert was issued in the districts of Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore, while others were also asked to keep a vigil, an official at the special relief commissioner's office said.

The depression, which lay centred at about 430 km south-east of Gopalpur, was likely to intensify into a deep depression and move in a north, north-westward direction, local met office director S Sahu said.

The system was likely to make landfall between Goplpur and Paradip tomorrow, Sahu said, adding rain and thundershower would occur at most places over coastal Orissa and a few places in the interior today.

Under the impact of the depression, winds with speeds reaching 45 to 55 kmph would occur along the coast.
