High class musical treat at Sankat Mochan conclave

THE SONOROUS ripples of classical music left the audience spellbound at Sankat Mochan Temple in Varanasi on the first day of the five-day Sankat Mochan Music Conclave on Monday night.

The programme started at 7.30 pm and continued till the wee hours on Tuesday.

The meticulous performance of an internationally acclaimed musician, Pt Ronu Majumdar, was the centre of attraction for the audience on the first day of the conclave. Pt Majumdar, a flautist of renown, enthralled the audience with ‘Alap’, ‘Jod’ and ‘Jhala’ in raga Mangal Bhairav. Later, he performed “Gatkari’ in ‘Jhaptal’ and ‘Teental’.

The memorable performance of Pt Majumdar was lauded by the audience who raised the traditional slogan of Varanasi ‘Har Har Mahadeo’. He concluded his performance by presenting a melodious bhajan tune on flute. He was accompanied by Sudhir Pandey on tabla. His programme was the seventh on the first night of the conclave.

Earlier, the programme began with the vocal recital of Romi Chakravarti who presented ‘drut khayal’ and ‘vilambit khayal’ in raga Charukeshi. She concluded her performance by presenting a thumri.

Amid rain, Kuchipudi dancer KV Satyanarayan and his accompanists come on stage and performed an eye-catching dance drama of Goddess Mahishasur Mardini. The exquisite limb and body movements of the dancers were much appreciated by the audience.

The fourth performance of the musical conclave was a sarod recital by Chandrima Rai.
