Kerala High court on Wednesday dismissed two petitions seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against CPI(M) leader M V Jayarajan for making "derogatory" remarks against judges of the court.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J Chalameswar and Justice P N Ravindran came down on the two petitioners advocate Edison of Thrissur and Basil of Ernakulam for filing the petitions without looking into provisions of law.
Jayarajan, a Marxist leader from Kannur, had last month allegedly made derogatory remarks against a Judge who had imposed restrictions on conducting roadside meetings and processions.
The court observed that the petitions were not maintainable as contempt proceedings could not be issued on the basis of petitions like this.
'No useful purpose will be served by directing the Registry to number the petitions', the bench held.
Contempt petitions can be initiated by the Advocate General with his consent or by suo motu.
The court is already hearing a petition filed by Advocate P Rahim of Thiruvananhtapuram to initiate contempt proceedings against Jayarajan.
