It is meant to be a lesson in environmentally-conscious living for students joining Hindu College.
The college is harvesting rainwater and has ensured that none is allowed to escape through storm water drains. Filtered water is not being used in the toilets and for gardening.
“We are only using untreated water for flushes in the toilets and for gardening and for this we are drawing groundwater. Since the water table is very high in this area we are allowed to draw water and we do not really need to recharge. But we felt that if we draw water and do not recharge, the water table will fall very soon. After all that is what happened in south Delhi,” said Kavita Sharma, principal Hindu College.
The UGC-funded water-harvesting project was completed at a cost of Rs 18 lakh in consultation with IIT Delhi. Four recharge pits have been dug and the entire piping system of the college changed. “We have a dual pipeline in Hindu for supplying treated water for cooking to the canteen and hostel mess and groundwater for toilets and other purposes,” said Sharma.
Hindu is also the only college that uses solar energy for heating water and running electrical appliances. “Solar energy is used for heating water in the hostel mess, bathrooms and college pantry,” said Sharma.
