The home guard of Haridevpur police station in south west Kolkata, Raju Gowala (30), was declared dead on being taken to a hospital. The police arrested the accused, Ashoke Das, from the spot and started a murder case against him.

The incident occurred when Gowala was alerted by the police station about a woman urging the police to save her from her husband’s beating. "Gowala was with a constable and the duo rushed to the spot. They found the wife and her daughter injured," said the police. Some locals also assembled at the spot on seeing the police.

"Soon, Das appeared at the scene and started chasing the police and objected to their presence in the midst of a family dispute," police said. When Gowala tried to overpower him, Das managed to snatch his service revolver from the holster and pulled the trigger, killing him instantly.

"Even on Saturday morning, the assailant was unrepentant," Khan told HT.
