A local court on Wednesday granted bail to Virender, a close aide of former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was booked in a sedition case for allegedly provoking riots during the Jat stir last month.

The relief was granted to Virender by district and sessions judge Sushil Kumar Gupta.

Earlier, Virender’s counsel argued in the court that the judge himself had observed that prima facie, a sedition case was not made out against his client. He maintained that even after 10 days of police remand and repeated questioning, the police had failed to substantiate Virender’s role in the violence.

Virender was later released from Sunariya jail here at around 6 pm and was given a rousing welcome by a large number of his supporters who lifted him on their shoulders and showered flowers on him.

After coming out of jail, Virender said he was booked in a false case. “This was a big political conspiracy, but the truth has finally won,” he said.
