The higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams are beginning on Thursday, but Raj Yadev has not got his hall ticket. He will be allowed to sit for his first exam on Friday only if he pays a penalty of Rs 9,000 for applying late for a hall ticket.
“My father is a farmer and I can’t arrange for so much money in a day. It seems like I will have to sit next year,” said a dejected Yadev.
Yadev is a student of L.T. Shinde College in Bhandup, which was derecognised in December last year.
A team from the board had visited the college and realised that the college had no infrastructure. It used to enroll students who had failed in Class 11 and pushed them to Class 12. It had been functioning like this for five years.
The students approached the board on Wednesday after the college authorities failed to arrange for their hall tickets.
“The board said we would have to pay the penalty. The college has not even held practicals and the authorities had promised us that we will get our hall tickets on Wednesday,” said Sai Atmaram, another student.
The board has assured the students that they will be allowed to sit for the exams, but they will have to pay the penalty. “When the college was derecognised, we asked the authorities to ensure that they arrange for students through other colleges. They submitted the forms on Tuesday, a month after the last date. So, obviously they will have to pay a penalty,” said Basanti Roy, divisional secretary of Mumbai SSC and HSC boards.
