House projects for poor in City cleared

THE STATE-LEVEL Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) steering committee on Monday cleared projects worth about Rs 430 crore to provide houses for urban poor in Bhopal. Minister for Urban Administration and Development Jayant Malaiya chaired the meeting.

The approved proposals would be submitted to the Union Government for the final approval. The Union Government is providing 50 per cent of total cost as grant under the JNNURM. The State Government will provide 20 per cent and the urban bodies will have to arrange the remaining 30 per cent from its own resources.

The committee approved the BMC proposal for construction of 21,456 houses for urban poor living in the scattered settlements of the City. This scheme will cost Rs 248.53 crore. The concrete houses will be constructed for slum-dwellers of Aradhana Nagar, Bijasen Nagar, Sanjay Nagar, Rajiv Nagar, Indira Nagar, Meera Nagar, Indira Nagar Phase-II, Baba Nagar, Arjun Nagar, Bhim Nagar, Madrasi Colony, Rahul Nagar, Durga Nagar, Rajiv Nagar Extension, Saraswati Nagar, Ishwar Nagar, Gulab Nagar and Vajpayee Nagar.

Earlier, the State steering committee of JNNURM had cleared the BMC project worth Rs 75 crore for providing houses to 5,764 urban poor families.

In most settlements, the BMC and BDA will provide houses in the three-storeyed buildings at the same place. The house will include two rooms, kitchen and a toilet. Besides, some projects of Indore and Jabalpur were also cleared.

Mayor Sunil Sood, Principal Secretary, Urban Administration, PD Meena, Secretary, Urban Administration, Malay Shrivastava, Bhopal Municipal Corporation Commissioner Manish Singh, Bhopal Development Authority Chief Executive Officer K P Rahi and other officials were also present. Jabalpur and Indore Mayors were also present at the meeting.
