Before the directors of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) meet in Kolkatta, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Arjun Singh has called their meeting to discuss threadbare all issues related to IIMs.
One of the major issues for discussion will be ways of giving more autonomy to institutes. The meeting to be held in the ministry headquarters at Shastri Bhawan on February 1 and will be the first direct interaction between Singh and IIM directors since the controversy over denial of permission to IIM Bangalore to open a campus in Singapore.
Some other IIMs were considering similar proposals but the ministry’s decision had put brakes on them. The ministry had said that IIMs should first consider catering to in country demand before going global. There was a furore from different quarters against the ministry’s direction.

Even Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal viewed that the ministry should allow foreign campuses. IT magnate Narayan Murthy of Infosys Technologies did not endorse the ministry’s view and supported IIM Bangalore.
Reversing the ministry’s stand in subtle way, Arjun Singh on Tuesday said the government was not adverse the IIM’s going global but should first amend their Memorandum of Association (MOA).
