As the new academic year is set to commence, government-run schools in Delhi-NCR will have at least 600 new students - all enrolled by Hindustan Times readers as part of the 'Enroll A Child' project of the 'You Read, They Learn' initiative.
As many as 284 Hindustan Times readers registered for the project. Over the last month, they spent Sundays in slums across Delhi-NCR, meeting parents of children who have not had the chance to enter a classroom. These readers, who chose to spend their weekends in the muggy summer convincing parents to take that big step towards education, come from different backgrounds - some are college students and young working professionals, while others are senior citizens.
The volunteers received guidance from CRY, HT's partner for this project.
Under the Hindustan Times 'You Read, They Learn' project, every day a part of the cover price HT readers pay for the newspaper goes towards educating underprivileged children in Delhi-NCR. Over the last 15 months the project has sent 10,812 children to school.
