According to an official, the Huda engineering wing is preparing the estimates of the project. All the 178 pits will be set up on Huda land that includes parks and green belts.

The department is expected to recharge 70% of rainwater that goes waste every year. “We are likely to float tender in a week’s time,” said another Huda official, adding that roughly R2 crore would be spent on the project. This is the first time that the authority is taking up such a major initiative to conserve water in the city.

The engineering wing had undertaken a survey to identify ideal locations.

“We have identified 178 locations so far. They were selected on the basis of water catchment possibility,” said the official. The project is expected to be completed in six months.

About 22 pits would be set up in Sector 14 while 20 in Sector 15-I. The district administration had asked the Huda and MCG and other departments to develop rainwater harvesting projects. The administration has got rap from the Punjab and Haryana High Court over rapid depletion of groundwater table.
