Hundreds of students, several members of civil society and senior officers on Sunday participated in the 'Walk for Srinagar' event in an effort to bring awareness among people here to keep the city clean.
The Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC) in collaboration with Department of Posts, J&K Circle, organised the grand marathon wherein school students walked from periphery of the Dal lake to municipal park near Lal Chowk.
Minister for urban development and urban local bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora, who flagged off the walk, said, "It is the responsibility of every stakeholder to share concern about keeping the city neat and clean."
He said the SMC was the prime agency for ensuring cleanliness of Srinagar city but at the same time all the stakeholders have to share their responsibility in keeping the Srinagar city neat, clean and green.
"The main purpose for organizing the rally was that the student community get acquainted about the importance of sanitation, cleanliness and greenery in life. It is very necessary to keep the Srinagar city neat, clean and free from pollution to attract more and more tourists towards the city," said the minister.
Ruling National Conference MLA Nasir Aslam Wani, also former tourism minister, said, "Such kind of events are very necessary for spreading awareness among the common masses about the benefits and importance of cleanliness and greenery for the better environ of the city."
