Hardline Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest at his residence on Thursday as he tried to stage a sit-in at the residency road area in Srinagar to protest alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Geelani was put under house arrest as he was preparing to sit on a dharna at Pratap Park," a Hurriyat spokesman claimed.
Police officials were not available for comment.
Geelani was not allowed to leave his house on Tuesday when he was scheduled to address a press conference at Hurriyat headquarters at Rajbagh.
A posse of police personnel have been deployed outside his residence, spokesman said.
Geelani has called for a general strike tomorrow to protest against the alleged incidents.
Meanwhile, police detained more than a dozen supporters of Geelani who tried to stage the dharna in the absence of their leader, officials said.
