AN ORIGINAL painting by maestro M F Hussain, which he himself gifted to Siyaganj shop owner Yusuf Ali years ago, was stolen this morning by a thief who came posing as a customer.
Soon after the shop opened at around 9 am on Monday morning, a 20-something youth in red T-shirt appeared inquiring for a canvass. Apparently he had studied and carefully planned the heist. On some pretext he sent Yusuf Ali inside the narrow shop. Within moments the unsuspecting shopkeeper returned only to find the sly ‘customer’ having decamped with the prized Hussain painting.
Yusuf immediately raised an alarm and ran chasers down the main street and the narrow bye-lanes, but the thief vanished in the morning din of the bazaar.
A dejected Yusuf Ali told Hindustan Times, “It was a cherished family heirloom.” Their establishment has been in existence close to a century now and had seen the likes of N S Bendre, D J Joshi and Vishnu Chinchalkar visiting the shop for making small purchases in their student days at the School of Fine Arts. All of them enjoyed discounts on outdated material and lenient credit terms.
