Governor HR Bhardwaj on Tuesday said Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had failed to prove his majority on the floor of House and gave him another opportunity to do so by October 14.
Bhardwaj described his giving a second chance as an "out of the way gesture" and "charity". "I give you a fresh opportunity to do so (prove that you have the majority in the house) by 11 a.m. on October 14," the governor said in a letter to the chief minister.
Yeddyurappa had failed to demonstrate majority in clear terms, said the governor, adding uniformed men and unauthorised persons had entered the floor of the House during the voice vote. Bhardwaj said he had discharged his duties as per the Constitution.
Asserting he had requested Yeddyurappa to prove his majority in view of the Supreme Court ruling in the S.R. Bommai case, the governor said a free and fair floor test was considered the best way to test the majority of the government in the House. Bommai was CM of Karnataka from August 13, 1988 to April 21, 1989. His government was dismissed by Governor P. Venkatsubbaia after legislators of the then ruling Janata Party withdrew support.
Though he refrained from directly reacting to the BJP’s allegations of partisan behaviour at the behest of Centre, Bhardwaj said he was fed up of corruption and illegal mining.

On disqualification of legislators, he said the same yardstick was not being used by the ruling party. "When Reddys (state ministers who led a mutiny against Yeddyurappa in 2009-end) hijacked their MLAs, did they disqualify anybody? They were promoted," he said.
