'I am getting threat calls from Asaram supporters'

Surat deputy commissioner of police Shobha Bhutada has alleged she has been getting threat calls from self-styled godman Asaram’s supporters after she began investigating the rape and sexual assault case against him and his absconding son Narayan Sai.

She stated in her complaint she had been told on the phone to stop looking for Narayan Sai and she would face consequences if she didn’t.

The mobile phone from which she received calls is registered in Madhya Pradesh.

“We have started probe in the complaint,” a police official from Surat said.

Meanwhile in Ahmedabad, the police on Monday interrogated Asaram’s wife and daughter regarding the alleged rape and sexual assault case in which they have been also named in the FIR filed by two Surat-based sisters.

“His wife, Laxmi, and daughter Bharti have been interrogated by the police. In the FIR, it has been stated that they also aided in the crime,” a police official said, adding that both had admitted that the girls who complained used to live in the ashram in Ahmedabad and Surat.

No relief

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain Asaram’s plea to restrain the media from covering the sexual assault case against him.

A bench comprising Chief Justice P Sathasivam and justice Ranjan Gogoi said, “At present, we cannot entertain your petition.”
