I declined offer to run for UNSG post: Kumaratunga

The former Sri Lankan president said she declined the offer due to the difficulties involved in handling powerful countries like US.

Former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga has said she turned down an offer made by two permanent United Nations Security Council members to contest for the post of Secretary General.

Chandrika, who is currently touring Pakistan as the UNESCO Advisor, told reporters on Friday night that two permanent UNSC members proposed to her to contest for the UN Secretary General's post, which was won by South Korean nominee Ban Ki-moon.

She declined the offer due to her own work pressure and the difficulties involved in handling powerful countries like the United States, Kumaratunga, who was the President of Sri Lanka for two terms was quoted as saying in the media on Saturday.

She met Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Friday and held talks with Pakistan Education Minister General (retd) Javed Ashraf Qazi.

She would visit the areas hit by last year's massive earthquake and take part in the World Islamic Economic Forum, besides meeting President Pervez Musharraf before leaving the country.
