Before attending the central committee meeting of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Soren told reporters: "I will resign from the post of chief minister in a day or two after ensuring the formation of an alternative government".
Soren will also visit Delhi to discuss the name of his successor.
Soren on Thursday lost the Tamar assembly by-election by 9,062 votes to Jharkhand Party candidate Raja Peter.
Soren, who assumed office in August last year, needed to win the by-election to remain chief minister in keeping with a constitutional obligation.
