A day after the CBI filed its supplementary chargesheet in the Ishrat Jahan case against a retired senior officer of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Friday said the covert operations of the IB have been made the subject matter of a criminal law investigation, damaging the agency’s ability to undertake such exercises.

He took a dig at home minister P Chidambaram saying the ‘ultimate wise man’, who was the home minister in 2009, undertook the operation with the idea of implicating Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi but ended up implicating a central agency, which is now accused of having engineered the fake encounter during the UPA-I rule.

“The theory of white beard and black beard is concocted... Those who were responsible for evidence collection, busting the module, interrogation of the accused are all sought to be implicated. The terrorist credentials of the victims are sought to be retrospectively wiped out,” he wrote in his blog.

He pointed out that the Centre had taken a categorical stand in the Gujarat HC that Ishrat was a LeT operative and the encounter of June 2004 was genuine.
