According to the Srinagar-based army spokesperson, the troops of the Infantry Unit carried out a search operation after it received intelligence inputs from the unit source about presence of an improvised explosive device (IED) on Shopian - Bahibug road.

"During the search operation, one cylinder-based IED planted under the culvert was found near village Lundura at 3:40 pm on Thursday," said the spokesperson.

The area was immediately cordoned on either side of the road. "The IED was destroyed in-situ by the combined Bomb Disposal Teams of police and army," he said.

The army spokesperson said troops averted a major tragedy by thwarting the "ill designs of the terrorists who intended to cause violence and terror in the assembly elections".
