The post graduate (PG) course will be introduced in the next academic session in 2007, said an IGNOU official. The Gandhi Smriti Darshan Samiti will jointly conduct the course.

“The duration of this course is one year. It will teach students about Gandhi’s principles in contemporary society. Peace and Conflict Studies, which forms the second part of the course, will focus on the relevance of Gandhi teachings in tackling issues like terrorism,” said professor D Gopal of IGNOU’s Social Sciences department.

“It will also address the issue of terrorism,” added Gopal. Several issues like the Green Movement, gender equality, child mortality and health issues like AIDS and malaria will also feature in this course.

“While the course traces the life of Gandhi from his days in Africa to pioneering India’s freedom struggle, it also charts how Gandhi’s principals were not included in governance after freedom. Concepts like promoting artisans, small-scale industries were first propagated by Gandhi and are relevant even today,” Gopal said.
