A plan for implementing 27 per cent quota for OBC students in the IIMs is ready. But there is a glitch: the directors of the six B-schools say it is impossible to enforce the quota in one go from June 2007.
The Core Group on Management institutions, headed by professor Samuel Paul, drew up the plan here on Monday. It will now be sent to Marpadi Veerappa Moily, chairman of the Oversight Committee.
The directors of the six IIMs and Mumbai's National Institute of Industrial Engineering have suggested introducing the quota in phases over the next three-four years.
"It'll be unfair to talk of specific recommendations," Paul told HT. "We've factored in the problems faced by each institution in putting the quota system into action at once at such short notice." To implement 27 per cent reservations, the IIMs will have to increase the intake of students by 54 per cent. "None of the IIMs can handle such an expansion in one year," he said. "We must do it in phases."
Paul said the most common problems for each of these seven institutes were a paucity of faculty, an inadequate infrastructure and insufficient funds. "We reviewed all these constraints and how long each institute would take to overcome (the limitations) and implement the new quota system," he said.

{{/usCountry}}The plan has also suggested the relaxation of rules concerning the recruitment of faculty for B-schools and remedial programmes for academically weaker students among the OBCs.
But none of the directors was forthcoming on the contours of the quota plan or the suggestions made to prepare their respective institutes for increasing the intake of students from the next academic year.
