MOST OF the steps to be introduced by the authorities of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) from the current session for ensuring anti-depressive academic environment at the institute are still awaiting approval of the governing body.
Measures that are within the powers of the Director of the IIT have already been introduced from the very first day of the new academic session. But many other steps that require the approval of the IIT-K governing body could not be implemented even after three months of the beginning of the session for want of approval of the apex body.
It is worth mentioning that in order to reduce academic and emotional stress among students, senior professors at the institute, had proposed certain changes in the curriculum, grading system and in other matters. Most of the proposals have been unanimously accepted by the teachers and the students alike. But their implementation depends upon the approval of the IIT-K senate.
According to a senior professor now no “F” grade will be given to the students for their poor performance at the examinations nor will their names be displayed at the notice board. The ‘fail’ result will be communicated to the student through the office-bearers of the student senate. For this members of the student senate have been given adequate directives and have been asked to keep a watch on the behaviour of weak students. If members of the senate notice any abnormal behaviour they will inform the teacher concerned for taking corrective measures.

{{/usCountry}}Steps to reduce academic and psychological stress among the students were taken soon after the suicide committed by Swapnil Dharaskar last year. After this incident students and teachers at the institute had formed a committee giving representation to the students to suggest certain measures to check such incidents in future due to stress. Consequently, a committee was constituted which discussed several measures during the past six months and prepared a draft proposal for the approval of the senate, the administrative body of the IIT-K.
