THE HIGH cost burden imposed by the third edition of Narmada project seems to have put the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) in an unforgiving mood towards water tax evaders. Especially those with unauthorised water connections.
The civic body has decided that persons applying for legalising connections will be taxed at the rate of Rs 160 per month even if the connection dates back to before October 1 - the day the new tax regime is to come into effect.
Similarly, residents granted building permission between April 11, when the tax hike was cleared by the IMC General Council, and October 1 will be liable to pay taxes as per the revised rate. An addendum to this effect was cleared by the General Council along with the water tax hike proposal.
In a further bid to raise water tax revenues the Corporation has made metered water supply mandatory for all connections measuring two inches or more starting April 11. These, too, will be charged according to the revised tax regime.
Until now metered water supply was being provided only to bulk users like Dewas, Mhow and the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology etc. Supply for every type of connection, domestic, commercial or industrial, will be metered once Narmada-III becomes operational in 2009.
