The Corporation has invited suggestions from CII for projects which could be funded under the Rs 50,000 crore Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). A meeting between CII delegates and Municipal Commissioner P Narhari to mull over the possibilities is scheduled to be held shortly.

Although the State Government has already approved the Rs 2,475 crore City Development Plan (CDP) civic officials say the document is a general roadmap for development and can be modified to suit particular needs.

“We have submitted a long funding wish list in the CDP but raising our 30 per cent share of projects could be a problem given the IMC’s financial state. It was this that led us to ponder involving local industrialists with the wherewithal to generate the necessary cash,” said Commissioner Narhari.

“A meeting with CII was scheduled for last fortnight but had to be postponed as most delegates left to participate in the Auto Expo in New Delhi,” he revealed.

The Commissioner pointed out that industrialists had played a major role in mobilising resources in cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad. “The IMC has urged the CII delegates here to emulate their southern counterparts. Industrialists here have been contributing to development and beautification projects but so far it has been on a piecemeal basis.

We want to formalise their involvement with specified funding for mutually agreed upon projects,” said the Commissioner. Narhari said that IMC and CII would sit down sometime next week to chart out an industry-funded development programme.
