The Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) intends to write to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to reduce the seats in those affiliated colleges that have not shown any improvement in ranking issued by the university, officials said.
The university had recently released a list of 115 engineering colleges and 139 colleges offering MBA courses, including colleges in Ghaziabad, Noida and Greater-Noida.
Two engineering colleges from Ghaziabad and one from Noida figured in the top ten list of the state. Two other Ghaziabad colleges and one college in Greater Noida offering MBA courses also figured in the top-ten list.
There were seven categories, from excellent to poor, to rank the colleges. Rankings of engineering colleges were based on results of theory examinations held between 2004 and 2008.
Rankings of MBA institutes were categorised on the basis of examination-results of 2007-08.
“These colleges have to improve at any cost. If they fail to show improvement, the university will write to the AICTE to reduce the number of seats allotted to them. Affiliation could also be cancelled in extreme cases,” said UPTU Vice-Chancellor Prem Vrat.

{{/usCountry}}As many as 10 engineering colleges have not found a place in the ranking and more than 60 per cent students have either failed or re-appeared examinations.
The university has provided them a ‘satisfactory’ grade. “The list would put more pressure on the colleges to improve and students and guardians will give priority to colleges ranked well during admissions,” said Vrat.
