If it does not rain heavily in the next four days, Ambernath will have no water. Chikhloli Dam, which supplies water to about 60,000 residents of Ambernath, has almost dried up.
The current stock of the water in the dam is available only for four days, said KN Shirse, executive engineer, Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), the state body that looks after water supply.
Earlier pumping was done for 24 hours, but since two months, it has been reduced to 10 to 12 hours a day, Shirse said.
This has created water problems in Shivaji Nagar, Navare Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Vadavali areas.
“We used to lift 6 mld water from Chikhloli Dam, but currently we able to lift only 2.5 mld,” Shirse added.
“We have already alerted the Ambernath Municipal Council (AMC) and are also creating awareness among the people so that situation does not go out of control. But we will have to stop pumping if it does not rain in four days.”
Sampada Gadkari, president of the AMC, said: “It is true that there is only four days of water left in the Chikhloli Dam. We have requested the MJP to lift water from the MIDC and Barvi points so that people don’t suffer. But still it is impossible to give water to all areas.”
