K Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and one of the foremost leaders in the health sector, was conferred a Doctorate of Science of the University of London by Princess Anne at the Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.
An expert in cardiology and diabetes, the New Delhi-based Reddy has been honoured and awarded by several national and international organisations for his research in heart diseases and for his work in promoting global health.
A Padma Bhushan awardee, Reddy told HT that he was particularly pleased that his oration at the conferrment ceremony was read out by Peter Piot, the Belgian microbiologist known for his research on ebola and AIDS.
He said: “I am greatly honoured, but more than an individual honour, it is a reflection of the importance of global health and India’s role in it. International cooperation is critical in this interdependent and inter-connected world”.
“It is also a recognition of India’s growing importance and stature in promoting a global approach to health”, Reddy added.
Reddy has headed the PHFI since its inception in 2006. Under his leadership, PHFI has established five Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs) across India and is working to transform public health through education research, policy support, public communication and development of affordable technologies for primary health services.
