Delhiites on Wednesday woke up to yet another chilly morning with dense fog enveloping several parts of the national capital, affecting movement of 70 trains and disrupting flight operations.

As temperatures across India continued to plummet and fog disrupted rail, air and road traffic, people braved the chill by gathering around bonfires and sipping warm cup of tea.

Minimum temperature dropped to 5 degrees Celsius, which was three notches below normal, according to the Met department.

Foggy conditions at the Palam observatory till 8.30am reduced visibility to zero while Safdarjung observatory recorded visibility at 150 metres.

Predicting party cloudy skies, the weatherman said maximum temperature may rise to 17 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

"The skies will remain partly cloudy today (Wednesday) and maximum temperature is expected to settle at 17 degrees Celsius," an official of the department said.

A bright sun greeted the residents of Chandigarh on Wednesday morning, but the minimum temperature dropped three degrees below normal to settle more than two notches since Tuesday.

The minimum temperature at Hisar on Wednesday settled at 6.7 degrees Celsius. Freezing cold swept Ambala too, which recorded a low of 4.8 degrees Celsius - two notches below normal.

Bihar also continued to shiver on Wednesday with the minimum temperature dipping to five degrees below normal in Gaya district with no respite from the cold wave in sight, meteorological officials said.

"A cold wave is sweeping across the state with Gaya recording the coldest temperature in Bihar for the second consecutive day with the minimum recorded at 4.2 degrees Celsius Wednesday," Met director RK Giri said.
