Indefinite curfew in Manipur's Imphal East and Imphal West districts was on Thursday relaxed for 12 hours.

Police and security forces kept vigil during the relaxation period which began at 5 am.The curfew was relaxed to enable people to buy essential items.

The curfew was imposed on August four in the wake of widespread protest against the killing of a young man in an alleged fake encounter by police commandos.
Prohibitory orders were also in force in Imphal and surrounding areas. 27-year-old man Chungkham Sanjit was killed in an alleged fake encounter by police commandos on July 23. A pregnant woman was also killed by stray bullets.
