"We want this as a good neighbour of Bangladesh. We are observing the overall situation," acting Indian High Commissioner Sarvajit Chakraborty said after calling on Awami League president Sheikh Hasina at her residence to invite her to a programme to mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi January 29-30.

Chakraborty said Hasina showed interest in attending the programme but said she would decide on travelling to India only after taking into account the overall political situation in Bangladesh.

Hasina, however, told the envoy during their hour-long meeting that she would try to send a delegation of the Awami League to India, The Daily Star newspaper said on Saturday.
