India, Singapore begin joint naval exercise

The exercise, being held for the first time off the eastern coast of India, will continue till March 8.

India and Singapore started their joint naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday.

The exercise, being held for the first time off the eastern coast of India, will continue till March 8.

The two navies would exchange operational experiences and focus on joint conduct of exercises including surface firings, anti-air engagements, anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol aircraft operations.

Two Victory class missile corvettes, one Fearless class ASW patrol vessel and one Fokker 50 maritime patrol aircraft will be participating in SIMBEX 2006 from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).

The Indian Naval participation in the exercise will include one Destroyer, two missile corvettes, one submarine and one maritime patrol aircraft, an official statement said.
