"This has been a very unfortunate incident in which an Indian student has been killed in St. Petersburg," external affairs ministry spokesperson Navtej Sarna told reporters here Thursday.

The Indian consulate in St. Petersburg has been in touch with the student bodies and local authorities over the incident, he said.

"They have been raising the issue of the security of Indian nationals in St. Petersburg," Sarna said.

"Our embassy in Moscow has also taken up the matter with the foreign office in Moscow pointing out the security lapses and urging an urgent investigation into the matter," he added.

Nitish Kumar Singh was brutally murdered Sunday by unidentified assailants allegedly belonging to neo-fascist groups.

"Four unidentified assailants stabbed an Indian citizen, a sixth-year student at the St. Petersburg Mechnikov Medical Academy, who later died of his wounds in the hospital," a police official in Moscow had said.
