As the IAEA board in Vienna decides on approving a New Delhi-specific safeguards pact, India on Friday underlined that it wants a “clean waiver” in the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

Speaking to reporters travelling with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Colombo for the SAARC summit, the official said there were some issues to be tackled in the exemption draft sent by the US to India which is proposed to be circulated to the NSG.
The official made it clear that India wanted a “clean waiver” so that NSG countries did not impose fresh conditions for carrying on global nuclear trade with New Delhi.
The 35-member board of the International Atomic Energy Agency Friday began its meeting in Vienna which is expected to approve the India-specific safeguards pact, a key step towards making the India-US civil nuclear deal operational.
The NSG will then to have to decide on amending its guidelines to allow global nuclear commerce with India.
