The Indian American Security Leadership Council (IASLC), a bipartisan organisation created to encourage closer ties between America and India, has hailed the signing of the Indo-US nuclear deal.

"We applaud Congress and President Bush for taking this crucial step. We believe that India, with over half a century of electoral stability, is a growing military and economic force and can help safeguard American security in a way that no other country in the region can.

This new agreement will help to remedy missing links in protection across the globe," IASLC president Ramesh V Kapur said on Monday.

IASLC was created in mid-2006 to mobilise American opinion in favour of legislative changes to enable nuclear power technology to be sold to India even though it is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

IASLC is mainly funded by the Indian-American business community.

Bush on Monday signed the landmark law that allows sale of nuclear fuel and technology to India after 30 years.
