Indian in UAE moves court against firm

An Indian worker in the UAE who met with an accident and suffered disability, has moved the court, seeking higher compensation from his employer and the insurance firm.

Fourty-year-old Ramjan Ali, a mason, met with an accident in April 2004 while working at a construction site near Jabel Dhana in Abu Dhabi's western region.

The employers offered Ali to pay an additional compensation of Dh15,000 (Rs 1.85 lakh approx) besides the Dh85,000 (Rs 10 lakh approx).

Ali, however, has filed a lawsuit against the company and the insurance firm citing that he borrowed almost an equal amount to help ends meet and also for legal expenses.

Ali is demanding a total of Dh350,000 (Rs 43 lakh approx) towards damages.

Legal adviser of Al Nasr Irrigation and Contracting Company, Nadim Al Haj, said the victim was offered his "rightful" compensation according to the law. However, Ali refused to accept the offer made by the insurance company, he said.

The hearing into the case is scheduled for next month.
