An 18-member delegation of Indian businessmen is to visit Myanmar on Thursday for comprehensive discussions with their Myanmarese counterparts to find ways of reviving declining trade along the border.
During the meeting at Tamu town, along the border with Manipur, the two sides will share various ideas and experiences besides the problems faced by them.
The issue of introducing inter-country banking facilities is likely to figure at the meet. Border trade between the two countries got off the ground in April 1995.
"The names of the Indian traders have been sent to the Myanmarese authorities to facilitate the visit," W Nabachandra, president of the Indo-Myanmar Traders' Union was quoted as saying by Mizzima News.
The delegation also includes Manipur's Commerce and Industries Commissioner PC Lamkunga.
Following the decline in trade between the two countries, the Manipur government has constituted a committee to get to the bottom of its causes.
A commerce official in Manipur said the prevailing law-and-order situation was a major impediment to trade.
"However, we are holding meetings from time to time with Myanmar traders and officials to improve the situation," he added.
The volume of border trade in the past three years is not encouraging as both import and export activities have revealed a steady downward trend.
