Selvi, a mother of two, had admitted murdering her employer in 2006, and had been in prison for five years.

The court upheld the local High Court's decision to sentence Selvi to four years' jail and ordered her release since the term had already been served.

Selvi, 40, burst into tears on hearing the verdict and thanked the judges.

On November 17, 2003, the woman was charged with the murder of the victim, G Rajam, at her rented house.

Three years later, the prosecution amended the charge to culpable homicide to which Selvi, who worked as a sweeper, pleaded guilty at the High Court.

On May 8, 2006, the Indian was sentenced to four years' jail and ordered to serve the term from the date of arrest on November 3, 2003. Despite completing her sentence, she continued to be held on remand pending the prosecution's appeal to the Court of Appeal.
