Alarmed over the increasing number of “unnatural killings and kidnappings” in Philippines recently, the Indian Mission in Manila has written to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take measures to dissuade Indians from migrating to the island nation for better prospects.
First Secretary, Indian Mission in Manila, Babu Ram confirmed that the embassy had apprised both the MEA and the secretary ministry of overseas affairs of the rising crime graph against Indians.
Talking to the Hindustan Times over telephone, Babu Ram revealed that a communiqué was sent to the ministries so that adequate measures could be taken up at the appropriate level to check the flow of Indians to Philippines.
“During the current year as many as 29 people of the Indian origin have died of which 16 were unnatural deaths. All the victims were Punjabis. We keep updating our senior officers and the headquarters in New Delhi on violence against Indians. The situation is deteriorating by the day. Most of the Punjabis are involved in money lending business and are affluent — and hence easy targets of criminal gangs,” Babu Ram said.
The Indian Mission in Manila also disclosed that the MEA has sent an official missive to the Punjab government to warn the youth against migrating to Philippines. The state government has been directed to send the order to the deputy commissioners’ level so that they take requisite steps, the mission said.
