Indigenous tech need of the hour: Minister

INDIA NEEDS indigenous technologies capable of catering to local demand. For this, the industry-academia relation needs to be promoted. Union Minister of State for Communication and IT Dr Shakeel Ahmad expressed these views, here on Sunday. He was chairing the technical session on the second day of the ongoing international conference on ‘Next Generation Communication Systems’ at JK institute of Applied Physics and Technology, Allahabad University.

Dr Ahmad said that the telephone subscriber base in the country was increasing by 60 lakh connections every month. Speaking about development in the field of information and communication, he said that only 18 lakh telephone connections existed till 1947.

Recalling the contribution of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and telecommunication expert Sam Patroda in information revolution, the minister said that earlier only the upper class had access to a telephone but now, everyone wanted a telephone connection.

Throwing light on changing technologies and contours of communication systems, Dr Ahmad said that subscribers were using 2G technology that would change once 4G technology was introduced.

Earlier, Prof Shamim Ahmad, vice-chancellor of Jamia Hamdard University, stressed on ICT, biotechnology and nanotechnology for making the lives of million worthy of being called as humans. He said that atoms could be more effectively used for peaceful purpose and for tapping Nature.
