Describing the conclusion of civil nuclear agreement between India and Canada a historical development, the Indo-Canadian community today said the landmark deal is a "turning point" in bilateral relations.
India and Canada had reached a landmark agreement on civil nuclear cooperation yesterday after months of hectic negotiations, paving the way for supply of Canadian atomic technology and uranium to New Delhi after a gap of 34 years.
"It is a turning point in Indo-Canada trade relations," President of Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) Asha Luthra said.
The concluded negotiations on a nuclear cooperation agreement between the two countries would allow Canadian companies to sell nuclear technology and materials to India.
Luthra was talking to PTI after receiving "Voice Achievers Award for 2009" for promoting Indo-Canada trade relations earlier in the day. She described the event as historic moment in Indo-Canada trade relations.
The negotiations on the nuclear deal were concluded at a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper here on the margins of Commonwealth Summit, with the two leaders describing the development as a "milestone" opening up "tremendous opportunity" for their countries.
Bhausaheb Ubale, a former commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission said that the agreement would open up India's civilian nuclear market, estimated to be worth $150 billion to Canadian companies.
