Industrial associations claimed construction activities being carried out real estate firms and vehicles were contributing to over 80 per cent of the pollution of the city.

“Today we wrote to tribunal not to ban new industries in Noida. The last one decade has already witnessed a decline in industrial growth,” said Vipin Malhan, president, Noida entrepreneurs’ association, an umbrella body of Noida industries.

Association of Greater Noida Industries, Indian Industries Association, Uttar Pradesh Udyog Vyapar Mandal, Noida Small Industries Association also echoed similar views and felt the ban would affect the industrial growth in twin cities.

Industry players say 2010-11 319 units shut operations in Noida and Greater Noida. In 2009-10, the number was 205. In 2009-10, 1,610 new units came up. But in the last financial year, only 1,360 units were set up. Poor power supply and deteriorating law and order remained the main issues.

“Industrial units contribute to only 20 per cent of the overall pollution. Industries have set up effluent treatment plants (ETPs) wherever required. As it is only non-polluting industries are allowed in Noida,” he said.

“Industries run from industrial sectors and the pollution from industry does not affect residents much who live in residential sectors. It’s the dust from builders’ construction sites which affects the residents most,” said many industrialists.
