Software services major Infosys has received a subpoena from a grand jury of a US district court that essentially requires the company to provide documentary evidence and records relating to usage of B1 business visas.
A subpoena is a court’s order that requires an individual (or a company) to appear before the court with necessary documents.
“We received a subpoena from a grand jury in the United States district court for the Eastern District of Texas. The subpoena requires us to provide information to the grand jury regarding our sponsorship for, and uses of, B1 business visas,” an Infosys spokesperson said in a statement.
The spokesperson further added that the Infosys intends to comply with the subpoena and would cooperate with the grand jury’s investigation.
The development comes at a time when Infosys is facing a lawsuit by a former employee Jack Palmer, who alleged that he was asked by Infosys to sign on documents that showed employees visiting US to attend meetings rather for work. Palmer alleged that this was done to overcome the H1-B visa caps and the company tutored such employees on ways to clear the immigration interviews.
B1 business visas are intended for short-term uses, such as consulting with business associates, attending business conventions or negotiating contracts. H-1B visa, on the other hand, is a non-immigrant visa, which allows US employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations.
