India fast bowler Zaheer Khan will miss the remainder of the Australian tour because of a hamstring injury, an Indian cricket official said on Sunday.
"Zaheer has been ruled out of the rest of the series," Indian board secretary Karunakaran Nair told reporters.
"The team physio has informed us that Zaheer will need four to six weeks to recover."
Nair was announcing a 16-member squad for next month's one-day tri-series against hosts Australia and Zimbabwe.
The Indian pace spearhead aggravated an injury to his left hamstring while bowling in the third test currently underway in Melbourne.
Although he went on to send down 25 overs, he was well below his best and conceded 103 runs in his wicketless spell.
Australia amassed 558 runs to take a 192-run first innings lead to raise hopes of victory to draw level in the four-test series.
Zaheer claimed a five-wicket innings haul in the drawn first test in Brisbane but suffered the injury during his effort to be sidelined for the second test in Adelaide, which India won by four wickets to go 1-0 up.
It is the second big injury blow for India are already without off spinner Harbhajan Singh, who will be out of action for several weeks after undergoing surgery last week for ligament tear in his spinning finger.
Ashish Nehra, who returned after ankle surgery for the Australia tests, and fellow left-arm Irfan Pathan, who made his international debut in the Adelaide test, have been included.
Nair said one-day batsman Mohammad Kaif was nursing a thumb injury but was expected to be fit before the tournament starts.
