Acknowledging that the task of the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) has become more difficult in view of "rising threat perception", Prime Minister Mamohan Singh on Saturday, however, emphasised that "innovative" thinking was required to minimise the inconvenience to the people.
"In a democratic society, it is imperative that the top political leadership should not only be easily accessible, but also visible and freely heard by the public at large," Singh said after presenting Indian Police Medals for Meritorious Service to SPG officers at a function to commemorate the 22nd Raising Day of SPG.
Singh's remarks came close on the heels of Home Ministry's discomfiture over Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who has been provided with top security cover, freely mingling with the public during roadshows in Uttar Pradesh poll campaign despite strict guidelines for SPG protectees.
"At the same time, I do understand and appreciate that security concerns also need to be addressed. I am, therefore, fully conscious that the task of the SPG is becoming more and more difficult, particularly in view of the rising threat perception," the Prime Minister said.
In an apparent reference to repeated complaints from the public over traffic snarls and other disruption caused due to VVIP movements, he said a lot was being done to minimise the inconvenience levels.

{{/usCountry}}"However, I am sure that a lot more can be done", he said adding innovative lateral thinking along with an understanding approach was the answer.
Observing that constant efforts were made by the SPG, which acts as an interface between political leaders and the people, the Prime Minister said this reflected the creativity of the officers of the elite force.
"We are all justly proud that our country has a committed, well-trained Force for the security of the highest political leadership of the country", he said adding that SPG was not resting on its laurels, but was constantly gearing up to meet newly emerging future challenges.
Singh also referred to new training infrastructure of the SPG like the Human Performance Centre, Firing Range and weapons systems. He assured the force that the government would ensure that the Force got all that it required to upgrade the skills of its personnel.
