The Hindustan Times had on May 16 reported about the pending direction after joint commissioner of police Maheshwar Dayal had written to deputy commissioner PC Meena in this regard. Meena has invoked Section 144 of The Code of Criminal Procedure-1973 for the implementation of the order that will apply to all companies, besides IT- BPO firms.

“The violators of the order will be punished under Section 188, IPC,” said DC Meena.

As per Nasscom, various IT-BPO firms in the city have staff strength of nearly two lakh, of which 35,000 are women. Of these, nearly 15,000 women work in night shifts. Nearly 7,000-8,000 cabs have been pressed into service by city BPOs and other firms to ferry employees.

“This is a mandatory and accepted norm in cabs plying for IT-BPO firms since 2010. This was done after directions from the Delhi police in the wake of the Dhaula Kuan rape incident wherein a BPO employee was raped. We have worked as an industry and ensured that GPS was fitted in all cabs over a period of time,” said Nitin Seth, chairman of the Northern Regional Council of the Nasscom and India MD, Fidelity Worldwide Investment.
